CLASSIC 166CLASSIC&ITALIAN FLMZISSOS, P.In every stage of its history, Italian cinema has drawn vital inspiration from Rome’s classical past. The earliest international blockbusters were made in Italy by filmmakers tackling Roman themes, perhaps most famously with the silent film Cabiria (1914). In the fascist era, ancient Rome was used as an historical ideal in propaganda films such as Scipio Africanus (1937). More recently films likeFellini’s Satyricon (1969) and Matteo Rovere’s First King (2019) continue the trend. In this course we will survey Italian cinema from its earliest beginnings to the present day, paying close attention to the various ways that Italian filmmakers have used Ancient Rome and the classical past more generally to provide subject matter for films of all types, and how Ancient Rome has frequently provided a privileged point of reference for understanding contemporary Italian society.
CLASSIC 170PERS EMP AND GREECEBRANSCOME, D.This course surveys the history of the ancient Persian Empire from 550-330 BCE, from the empire’s founding by Cyrus II to the death of the last Achaemenid Persian king, Darius III. Much of what we know about the Persian Empire comes from what ancient Greek authors, such as the historians Herodotus andXenophon, the tragedian Aeschylus, and the biographer Plutarch, had to say about it; when relying on the work of these authors, we are forced to some extent to view the Persians and their empire through a Greek lens. And yet, whenever possible in this course, we will also consider what the ancient Persians themselves thought about their empire. Thus, the readings for the course will not only be Greek literary sources, but also Persian written and visual sources, including inscriptions, seals, coins, and archaeological sites and monuments.
