CLASSIC 176SLAVERY ANCNT ROMEZISSOS, P.This course will examine the institution of slavery in the ancient world, with a specific focus on Roman slavery.  We will examine the vast range of slave experience, from the brutal life of rural ‘chain-gangs’ to the perilous glamor of gladiators and the often comfortable existence of the urban domestic slave. We will also look at the great slave rebellions, such as that of Spartacus, and other ways in which slaves might resist or contest their servitude. An important objective will be to explore the social, ideological and economic basis of ancient slavery, as well as some of the ways in which it differs from more recent forms (e.g., ancient slavery was not race-based, and was sometimes voluntary).  Grading will be based on quizzes and exams, a short assignment/presentation, attendance and class participation
