| CLASSIC 170 | THE ROMAN ARMY | ZISSOS, P. | The army was the quintessential institution of ancient Roman society. It was a key driving force behind many facets of the Roman state, from politics and citizenship to economic life and even religion. In its developed form it was an unrivalled war machine that dominated the ancient world, creating what has been described as the ‘first global state’ through its conquests and then policing and defending that global state successfully for many centuries. In this course we will trace out the evolution of the Roman army from its origins as the citizen militia of a modest city-state in central Italy to its emergence as an ethnically diverse professional standing army (and navy) with unrivalled capabilities. We will consider its key role in spreading Roman culture to conquered territories and spurring economic growth and urbanization in those areas. We will also consider how its increasing political role in the later imperial period contributed to the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West. |
