CHINESE 1BFUNDAMNTLS MANDARINSTAFFInnovative approach with emphasis on the four fundamental skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Taught in Mandarin Chinese using the Pinyin system of Romanization and both traditional (full-form) and simplified characters. Chapter tests on all 4 skills, writing assignments, daily vocabulary quiz, and final exam. Throughout the quarter, students will (1) Learn about 250 Chinese characters and 400 phrases; (2) Make sentences with vocabulary and sentence patterns learned in classes; (3) Participate in short dialogues, discussions and conversations; (4) Write notes, dialogues, articles and skits. The goal of this course is to achieve basic proficiency in Mandarin Chinese in order to communicate with speakers of Chinese in daily conversation about common topics and to read short passages about simple matters from both authentic materials and pedagogically prepared materials. Culture notes and knowledge of appropriate behaviors in a Chinese-speaking society will also be introduced. Prerequisite: Completion of Chinese 1A or equivalent. CHINESE 1MBFUND CHINESE/BKGRNDSTAFFThe Chinese 1MA-1MB-1MC series is designed for heritage learners with no or minimal previous experience in the written language.  Both authentic material from a wide variety of sources within the culture and pedagogically-prepared material will be used to develop students' basic literacy skills and the ability to use the language to communicate in culturally, socially and linguistically appropriate ways.  Conducted exclusively in Mandarin Chinese using the Pinyin system of Romanization and both traditional (full-form) and simplified characters. Chapter tests, writing assignments, daily vocabulary quiz, and final exam.  Prerequisite: Completion of Chinese 1MA or equivalent. CHINESE 2BINTERMED MANDARINSTAFFThe Chinese 2A-2B-2C series will use both authentic materials from a wide variety of sources within the culture and pedagogically-prepared materials to further develop students' listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, and the ability to use the language to communicate in culturally, socially and linguistically appropriate ways. Throughout the series advanced grammatical patterns will be gradually introduced and reviewed. By the end of the series, students are expected to: (1) Develop reading comprehension from a wide selection of authentic materials; (2) Handle reasonably complicated survival situations; (3) read and write paragraph length narrations and descriptions of real life events, as well as expositions and argumentations concerning real or hypothetical issues. Conducted exclusively in Mandarin Chinese using the Pinyin system of Romanization and both traditional (full-form) and simplified characters. CHINESE 10PEER TUTORING PRGMSTAFFThe Chinese Peer Tutoring Program is designed to engage native speakers of Mandarin Chinese to provide support to students enrolled in a Chinese language course that may need assistance with course work and/or wish to improve their language skills. Tutors will be scheduled for a weekly tutoring time and meet students on a first-come-first-served basis in a room assigned by the department. Tutors may repeat enrollment up to 4 times.

Tutors will earn one P/NP unit for one hour of tutoring each week and will engage in various activities: help guide language students through homework, review the week’s lectures, go over papers, and work on oral skills & pronunciation. Tutors must attend a one-time, mandatory training workshop at the start of the course, and complete a self-evaluation at the end of each quarter.

Prerequisites for tutors
• Native or near-native fluency in Mandarin Chinese
• Students wishing to participate in the program will be interviewed by Chinese faculty to ensure that language competency is at a sufficient level
CHINESE 40TEACHING CHINESESTAFFPedagogical Chinese is designed to give advanced Chinese learners exposure to the theories and practical applications of Chinese language pedagogy and to enhance both their linguistic skills in the Chinese pedagogy context and their understanding of current issues and standards in teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL). This course is designed to be student-centered, content- and task-based. It is reading and discussion intensive.  Students will spend time outside of class to observe actual Chinese language classes, write a report to reflect on their classroom visits, and create an original lesson plan. Emphasis will be given to help students acquire language skills and language learning skills required to prepare themselves for a professional career in teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL). While maintaining a focus on linguistic features, students will learn both about general theories of language pedagogy and specific TCFL issues arising from the special characteristics of the Chinese language, including tones, a character-based writing system, and special Chinese grammatical structures. The study of these characteristics unique to Chinese will, in turn, help students gain a deeper understanding of the Chinese language.  This course will be conducted exclusively in Mandarin Chinese and students are expected to fully participate in all classroom activities in Mandarin Chinese.
CHINESE 100BCLASSICAL CHINESERAO, X.This course is the second quarter of the introduction to Classical Chinese. After building the foundation of the language through learning its basic vocabulary, grammar, and syntax in Chinese 100A, this course will continue the reading of the philosophical and historical texts from the Warring States and Han period, including Zhuang Zi, Meng Zi, and Shi ji (Records of the Grand Historian). The objective of this course is to familiarize students with some of the shared canon of Classical Chinese and broaden their experience with the rhetorical features of the language.
CHINESE 103BADVANCED MANDARINSTAFFThe Chinese 103A-103B-103C series is a continuation of the Chinese 2 series. Emphasis is placed on advanced conversation and written expression to improve the ability to communicate in expected and unexpected situations. Readings are based on modern Chinese prose and newspapers, with focus on academic skills. Emphasis is also placed on self-expression in problem-solving tasks, defense of decisions and classroom discussions. Daily vocabulary quiz, oral reports, individual and group projects, chapter tests, writing assignment, and final examination. Prerequisite: Completion of Chinese 103A or equivalent. CHINESE 104A4TH YEAR MANDARINSTAFFCH104 is an advanced fourth-year Chinese language course designed for students with three years of prior study. It emphasizes expanding language skills through the introduction of authentic literary materials, including prose, short stories, and film. The course incorporates multimedia and AI tools to enhance comprehension and expression, fostering creative thinking, engagement with social issues, and self-expression. Its goal is to linguistically prepare students for future academic or professional pursuits.

Note: This course is not for native speakers of Chinese.
CHINESE 115HONGLOU MENGHUANG, M.In this class we will read the eighteenth-century Chinese novel Honglou meng in Chinese  (known in English as The Story of the Stone or The Dream of the Red Mansion) in Chinese (only the first 80 chapters). This course is designed for students with native fluency in Chinese and the class will be conducted in Chinese. There will be mid-term and final exams and pop quizzes (all in Chinese). Emphasis is on close reading and literary analysis.  A student is expected to purchase a copy of the novel on his or her own (it won't be available for purchase at UCI bookstore).
