CHINESE 1AFUNDAMNTLS MANDARINWU, D.Innovative approach with emphasis on the four fundamental skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Taught in Mandarin Chinese using the Pinyin system of Romanization and full form characters. Bi-Weekly quizzes, listening and speaking tests, skits, group activities and final exam. Throughout the quarter, students will (1) Learn to read and write with the Pinyin System; (2) Learn about 400 Chinese characters and 900-1000 phrases; (3) Make sentences with vocabulary and sentence patterns learned in classes; (4) Participate in short dialogues, discussions and conversations; (5) Write notes, dialogues, articles and skits. The goal of this course is to achieve basic proficiency in Mandarin Chinese in order to communicate with speakers of Chinese in daily conversation about common topics and to read short passages about simple matters from both authentic materials and pedagogically prepared materials. Culture notes and knowledge of appropriate behaviors in a Chinese-speaking society will also be introduced. Prerequisite: Chinese Placement Test and Faculty Oral Interview. CHINESE 3AADVANCED MANDARINHU, J.The Chinese 3A-3B-3C series is a continuation of the Chinese 2 series. Emphasis is placed on advanced conversation to improve the ability to communicate in expected and unexpected situations. Readings are based on modern Chinese prose and newspapers, with focus on academic skills. Emphasis is also placed on self-expression in problem-solving tasks, defense of decisions and classroom discussions. Oral reports, individual and group projects, quizzes, midterm and final examination. Prerequisite: Completion of Chinese 2C or equivalent. Authorization code can be obtained in HIB 466.
CHINESE 100ACLASSICAL CHINESEFULLER, M.An introduction to classical Chinese that emphasizes close analysis of its grammatical structures. The course begins with simple, well-known stories and gradually introduces more complex texts. Taught as a language course, the class stresses daily preparation and the detail of wen yan usage rather than English translation per se. There are biweekly quizzes and translations as well as a final exam. The classes are conducted in English. Prerequisite: Chinese 3C. (Note: Japanese 3C and Korean 3C also considered adequate background for this course). Note: There is an active prerequisite check in place for this course.
CHINESE 101A4TH YEAR MANDARINHUANG, M.This is a course designed for students who have successfully completed Chinese 3C or the equivalent. We will do intensive reading in a variety of genres (short stories, essays, news articles, etc.) The emphasis will be on reading comprehension although considerable attention will also be devoted to writing. A student is expected to preview carefully each reading assignment. There will be frequent pop quizzes, mid and final exams. A student will have to be “screened” by the instructor during the first day of class before he or she is permitted to enroll in this class.
CHINESE 115MODERN CHINESE LITMENG, Y.This course gives the student a general view on the “modern” aspects of the unfolding history of Chinese literature during the first half of the twentieth century. The course addresses the questions of what had brought forth new aesthetics to the literary world of China, and why certain genres and conventions were replaced. The course will specially focus on the issue of whether these changes reflected a “natural” triumph of a “Western modernity” over “Chinese tradition”. The course will be conducted in Chinese and we will be dealing with literary works as well as scholarly writings. Requirements include papers, midterm and final examinations. Prerequisite: Chinese 101ABC or equivalent.
