CHINESE 100BCLASSICAL CHINESESCRUGGS, B.This course is the second quarter of the introduction to classical Chinese. In the first term we stressed the basic syntactic patterns of the language, and this quarters readings build upon that foundation. In this quarter we continue to read short texts from the Warring States and Han period. Then we consider longer passages from Zhuang Zi and Meng Zi; if there is time and interest we can also include the Shi ji (Records of the Grand Historian). The particular stress of this term is to broaden students experience with the rhetorical features of the classical language.
CHINESE 115JIN PING MEIHUANG, M.This course is devoted to the close reading of the sixteenth-century erotic Chinese novel Jin Ping Mei in its original Chinese version (known in English as The Plum in the Golden Vase or The Golden Lotus). The class is designed for students with native fluency in Chinese. The class will be conducted in Chinese. There will be pop quizzes,  mid-term and final exams (all in Chinese). Students are expected to bring their own copies of the novel (e-version is okay, though not ideal, so long you can access it during class discussions).
