| CHINESE 1B | FUNDAMNTLS MANDARIN | STAFF | The Chinese 1A-1B-1C series adopts innovative approaches with emphasis on the development of interpersonal, interpretational, and presentational competence in all aspects of the target language: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Taught in Mandarin Chinese using the Pinyin system of Romanization and full form characters (or both full-form and simplified in some classes). Chapter tests, assignments, skits, group activities and final exam. Throughout each quarter, students will 1. learn to read and write (word processing) with the Pinyin system; 2. learn about 300 Chinese characters and 500 phrases; 3. participate in short dialogues, discussions and conversations; 4 write notes, dialogues, essays and skits; 5.read short passages about simple matters from both authentic materials and pedagogically-prepared materials. The goal of this class is to develop basic linguistic, social and cultural competence in the target language; therefore, culture notes and knowledge of appropriate behaviors in a Chinese-speaking society will also be introduced. To accommodate students of different language backgrounds, 3 parallel tracks are offered: one for Mandarin speakers, one for speakers of other Chinese dialects, and one for students with no Chinese heritage. Prerequisite: Chinese Placement Test and Faculty Oral Interview. Authorization to enroll can be obtained in HIB 452 or 466. |
| CHINESE 2B | INTERMED MANDARIN | PETERSEN, Y. | The Chinese 2A-2B-2C series will use both authentic and pedagogically-prepared materials from a wide variety of sources within the culture to further develop students' interpersonal, interpretational, and presentational competence in the target language in areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Throughout the series, advanced grammatical patterns will be gradually introduced and reviewed. By the end of the series, students are expected to: 1) develop reading comprehension from a wide selection of authentic materials; 2) handle reasonably complicated survival situations; 3) read and write paragraph length narrations and descriptions of real life events, as well as expositions and argumentation concerning real or hypothetical issues. Taught completely in Mandarin Chinese using the Pinyin system of Romanization and both simplified and full form characters. Chapter tests, assignments, oral report, group projects and final exam. Classroom activities include open discussions, debates, skits, game playing, movie watching, and group projects. To accommodate students of different language backgrounds, 3 parallel tracks are offered: one for Mandarin speakers, one for speakers of other Chinese dialects, and one for students with no Chinese heritage. | CHINESE 3B | ADVANCED MANDARIN | CHEN, J. | The Chinese 3A-3B-3C series is a continuation of the Chinese 2 series. Emphasis is placed on advanced communication skills to improve the ability to handle both expected and unexpected situations. Readings are based on modern Chinese prose and newspapers, with focus on academic skills. Emphasis is also placed on self-expression in problem-solving tasks, defense of decisions and classroom discussions. Oral reports, individual and group projects, quizzes, midterm and final examination. Prerequisite: completion of Chinese 2C or equivalent. Authorization code can be obtained in HIB 452 or 466. |
| CHINESE 100B | CLASSICAL CHINESE | FULLER, M. | The second term of an introduction to classical Chinese both emphasizes close analysis of grammatical structures and increasingly focuses on rhetorical features. This term begins with simple, well-known stories and gradually introduces more complex texts. Taught as a language course, the class stresses daily preparation and the detail of wenyan usage rather than English translation. There are quizzes every other week and translations as well as a final exam. The classes are conducted in English. The required prerequisite for this course is Chinese 100A. |
| CHINESE 101B | 4TH YEAR MANDARIN | HU, Y. | 101B is a continuation of 101A in the fall. The emphasis is on reading comprehension and vocabularies building. Students will read different styles of short essays dealing with different topics in daily life as well as some fictional stories. There will be pop quizzes to evaluate your preparedness, plus mid-term and final exams. Written assignment includes exercises and paragraph and sentence-writing. |
