CHINESE 100CCLASSICAL CHINESEZHAO, Y.This course is the third quarter of the introduction to Classical Chinese. Through reading the philosophical and historical texts primarily from the Warring States and Han period in the first two quarters, students have learned and practiced the basic vocabulary, grammar, and syntax of the language. In this quarter, we will proceed to read writings from the Tang and Song dynasties composed in various genres, including marvelous tales, ancient-style and regulated poems, song lyrics, essays, and odes. Selected texts from the Ming-Qing period will be added if there is enough time and interest. The course aims to further enrich students’ experience of reading Classical Chinese by introducing texts with growing difficulty and sophistication.
CHINESE 101A4TH YEAR MANDARINSTAFFThis is an advanced course that continues the study of the Chinese language after the first three years of lower division language instruction. In this course, we emphasize the written forms of Chinese language and approach language learning through the reading of literary works. Besides improving students’ ability in reading and writing, this course will also expose students to different literary genres such as fiction and non-fiction prose. Building on students’ existing knowledge of vocabulary and grammar, we introduce more sophisticated and elaborate expressions of the Chinese language. Key components of the course require students to 1) interpret the content of each lesson from a more individualized perspective, and 2) compose a carefully designed series of essays to develop their written language skills.
