Event Details

On October 28, 2015 in the University Club Library, Dr. Frank Meyskens, clinical professor in the School of Medicine and published poet, gave a poetry reading and reflected on the links between his poetry and his years as an oncologist. His reading, titled “Behind the Bulletproof Vest: ‘Aching for Tomorrow’ and ‘Believing in Today,’ touched on three primary themes: the effect of serious illness on patients, families, and doctors, the repose of patients and doctors to serious illness and the end of life, and the role of humor in the face of serious illness. In order to explore these themes, Dr. Meyskens read seventeen poems, and engaged the audience of about thirty, from around UCI in a discussion both about death and poetry. This lecture was a part of the Medical Humanities Initiative’s Works-in-Progress series, where faculty from around campus have the opportunity to showcase their research projects dealing with the intersection of medicine, arts, and the humanities to an interdisciplinary audience.
