BIOGRAPHY AND AUTOBIOGRAPHY
April 28-30, 2011
The UCI Department of Spanish & Portuguese and UC Mexicanistas are pleased to invite submissions for the Seventeenth Annual Juan Bruce-Novoa Mexican Conference to be held April 28-30, 2011. Our guest speakers will include Barbara Jacobs, author of the novel Las hojas muertas, a daily contributor to La Jornada, and a prominent critic of contemporary literature; and Graciela Iturbide, an award winning photographer who is considered one of the most important and influential Latin American photographers of the past four decades; as well as academics from the U.S. and Mexico who are conducting research on themes related to this year’s topic: Biographical and Autobiographical Discourses. All literary genres, including historical narrative, letters, diaries, chronicles, testimonials, poetry, and theater, as well as film, performance, and other types of representations are welcomed.
The conference will emphasize, but is not limited to, the following topics:

❖ Faux History: chronicles, narratives, & the historical novel

❖ The politics of memory

❖ Autobiographical representations and gender studies

❖ Oral biographical records: the storyteller paradox
-
❖ Biography as metaphor/metaphor as biography: (auto)biographical poetry
We will also consider papers on other topics that are not listed in this year’s theme. Papers should be written in either Spanish or English. Presentations are limited to no more than 20 minutes (8 pages double-spaced). If you are interested in reading an original paper, please submit a one-page abstract electronically to mexconf@uci.edu by the deadline of February 7, 2011. Proposals should also include the following information: Title of the presentation, name of participant, affiliation, academic status, mailing address, telephone and email. The selection committee will respond to all proposals by February 28, 2011.
Registration fees: This year’s conference will be $35 for students and $45 for professors until March 26, 2010. Subsequent fees will be $45 for students and $55 for professors. If you have any questions, please contact:
