The Outlines of a Programme to Decolonise Abolitionism
Friday, February 27, 2015
126 Murray Krieger Hall
2:00 – 3:30 PM

Indrani Chatterjee is Professor of History at the University of Texas at Austin. Professor Chatterjee argues that from the point of view of slaves in Muslim households in South Asia in the late 18th century, abolition under the aegis of British navies and legislatures actually impoverished many of these formerly fostered members of local societies. The study of abolition in the subcontinent, she suggests, should be decolonised from their perspective. In this talk, she lays out a program that takes history of property in the subcontinent seriously especially as it related to slaves in Muslim households in South Asia. In the process, she demonstrates that trans-oceanic histories are not separable from the domain of colonial fiscal or revenue policies.

This talk will be immediately followed by dialogue-workshop with graduate students. Interested participants should email Phillip Ninomiya (par@uci.edu) for the selection of readings by Professor Chatterjee in preparation for the graduate student meeting with her afterwards.

All are welcome to attend.  For more information, please email Phillip Ninomiya (par@uci.edu).
