COM LIT 102WRETHINKING IMMIGRATION: FILIPINO AMERICAN LITERATURE IN ENGLPANGILINAN, M.Introduction to Filipino American literature of the 20th century, organized broadly around the topics of immigration, national identity, and transnational approaches to culture. Though discusses canon formation, the goal is neither to offer tidy classifications of the literature, nor to focus solely on ethnic identity politics, but to approach Filipino American literature as a diasporic literature that both informs and is informed by a variety of transnational sites, contexts, and interactions. Topics include transnationalism and immigration; the evolution of Filipino American writing from the labor and agricultural movements of the early 19th century to the transnational concerns of the 21st century; approaches to language in the form of "code switching" ("Taglish" as well as Pidgin and nonstandard "slang" or English dialect); gender politics and overseas labor; and inter-ethnic conflicts and cooperation between Filipino Americans and other ethnic American groups (Hawaiian, Vietnamese, Mexican, Japanese). Prerequisite: satisfactory completion of the lower-division writing requirement.
