| ASIANAM 55 | ASAM & THE MEDIA | VILLEGAS, M. | This class is a survey of Asian American media representations and Asian American cultural production. The course is greatly informed by the recurring cultural status of Asians as incompatible with, alien, and threatening to a traditional American racial order. At the same time that their representations have been “spoken for” and shaped by white popular media, especially in cartoons, film, magazines, and television, we will also examine Asian Americans’ resistance to and accommodation of such cultural regimes via their participation in sports, performance, music, and internet culture. |
| ASIANAM 150 | ASNAM FOOD POLITICS | O'BRIEN, G. | This introductory seminar course will investigate Asian American Identity, Culture and Community through and exploration of food. Notions of culture, politics, taste, authenticity, emotions and memory will be invoked through readings and eatings. This course will explore the origins of iconic “Asian” food such as Chop Suey and fortune cookies as well as investigate the relationship of Asian Americans to the labor of production of food and the use of food in Asian American literature. This course examines ideas of colonization, immigration, globalization, nationalism and transnationalism. |
