This survey course examines the rich social histories and visual expressions of Asian American artists throughout the twentieth century. Our investigation explores the artistic production within significant historical settings that pertains to Asian Americans, such as war, migration, and U.S. legislation. These cross-cultural and dynamic intersections resulted in a broad and diverse body of artwork that ranges from abstraction to figuration, European to Asian styles of artistic practice. Students taking this course will gain in-depth knowledge of the art and histories of Asian Americans, and a proficiency in some of the broader art historical narratives within both Modern and Contemporary Art of the United States. Visual images, videos, course lectures, and class discussions are the primary means of investigating these topics. Participation, Paper, Midterm, and Final Exam determine grades. Same as Art His 163.
