ASIANAM 53ASAM &COMP RACE RELKIM, C.Analyzes the Asian American experience in comparative perspective, which includes comparisons of different ethnic and racial groups, and across gender and class. Possible topics include labor, economy, politics, migration, nation, popular culture, gender, family, sexuality, and multiraciality.
ASIANAM 100WRSCH METH/FIELD RESVO, L.Explores various research methodologies for Asian American Studies combining theoretical knowledge with field research. Goals: conduct field research about immigrants and refugees from Asia. Topics vary: migration and labor, assimilation and cultural preservation, cultural expressions in the diaspora.
ASIANAM 117WARFILMS:GNDR,RC,SXSHROFF, B.This class will examine the genre of war films and attempt to expand the genre by including films that deal with the aftermath of war and films about border conflicts. We will examine the representation of racial, gendered and national discourses within relevant social, historical and cultural contexts, how films reconstruct gender norms of masculinity and femininity as they represent violence, death, martyrdom and heroism. We will analyze how films rewrite the past so that ideologies of nation, masculinity, and heroism are inscribed on American bodies, and themes such as rite of passage, patriarchal heroic leadership and reversal of national humiliation, militarized masculinity, masculinity in crises are played out in multiple contexts. We will also examine the issue of military prostitution in the context of war. The selection of films will include, Green Berets, Rambo First Blood Part II, Turtles Can Fly, Women Outside.

ASIANAM 168ANIMAL RIGHTSKIM, C.Examines animal rights/welfare movement’s efforts to transform moral, practical, and legal standing of nonhuman animals in contemporary U.S. Explores intersection of racism, sexism, and speciesism informed by theories of race and ethnicity, including Asian American Studies.
