| ART HIS 140B | INTL ART SCENE | KASHANI, D. | The most innovative art of today is no longer centered on one city like New York; It is emerging in places like Beijing, Chicago, Dubai, Los Angeles, Mexico City, and Tehran. In this course, we will examine contemporary art exhibition practices in comparative global contexts. We will consider the various ways that art institutions such as museums and commercial galleries, as well as alternative and experimental art spaces, function in diverse case studies. We will analyze circuits of artistic production and display that both reveal as well as shape social realities and national identities in each setting. Through a discussion of art auctions and internally organized exhibitions, we will trace these case studies within the larger circuit of global art market exchange. Through weekly readings, discussions, and a final research project on an “art scene” of the student’s choice, we will analyze such institutional examples in conversation with site-specific public artwork that travels beyond national borders and institutional boundaries. This course is intended for undergraduate students of all majors. No prerequisites. |
