AFAM 40AAFRICAN AMERICAN ICOOKS CUMBO, B.
AFAM 143BPM2:HIP-HOPMUTERE, M."Hip-hop is caught in the contested space that lies at the intersection of cultural and commercial interests and forces. This course will examine that tension from an Afrocentric perspective, grounding the dynamic of hip-hop’s key elements within the formidable history and expectations of oral-tradition that gave rise to this expression in the American theater from the early 1970s to its present-day iterations. We will evaluate the extent to which the community voice and interests have been co-opted - e.g. with messages promoting violence and misogyny - either through adversarial mainstream industry interests and/or through a lax sense of cultural and community-centered agency. As part of a generation that can see beyond the smoke and mirrors of corporate-manufactured hip-hop, students in this class will be tasked with re-asserting humanity’s ownership of this vital platform of oral-communication as it was traditionally and/or originally intended."
