The UCHRI graduate student research group Performance in the Wake warmly invites you to our series of public events on the topic of Territories this Fall. Throughout 2020-21, we study contemporary Ibero-American performances in the wake of the political for they provide us with theories, methods, and contestations of the political today. This November 2nd, 11am PST, join us for our second event: Intimate borders - Political spaces and territories with Minerva Cuevas and Sandra Noeth. In this event, we ask: How do interventions into public space provide us with methods to rethink these spaces, be they international borders, urban spaces, museum spaces? We will discuss with Minerva Cuevas how her creative and critical work, and with Sandra Noeth how her analysis of border performances, challenge our notions of shared space. Minerva Cuevas was born in Mexico City in 1975. She is a conceptual and socially-engaged artist who creates sculptural installations and paintings in response to politically-charged events, such as the tension between world starvation and capitalistic excess. Cuevas documents community protests in a cartography of resistance while also creating mini-sabotages—altering grocery store barcodes and manufacturing student identity cards—as part of her non-profit Mejor Vida Corp / Better Life Corporation. Cuevas finds provocative ways to intervene in public space, whether through the deployment of billboards and posters, or by hacking public utilities to provide discounted or free services. Minerva Cuevas attended the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas UNAM. Recipient of several international and national awards, Cuevas has had major exhibitions at Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporaneo (2013); Kunsthaus Bregenz (2013); Museo de la Ciudad de México (2012); Musée d’art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (2012); Liverpool Biennial (2010); Berlin Biennale (2010); Whitechapel Gallery (2010); KW Institute for Contemporary Art (2010); Centre Pompidou (2010); SFMoMA (2008); Van Abbemuseum (2008); Biennale de Lyon (2007); Kunsthalle Basel (2007); Bienal de São Paulo (2006); and the Istanbul Biennial (2003), among others. Minerva Cuevas lives and works in Mexico City, Mexico.
Sandra Noeth is a professor at the HZT-Inter-University Centre for Dance Berlin; curator and dramaturge active internationally in independent and institutional contexts. She specializes in ethical and political perspectives toward body-practice and theory (see ‘Violence of Inscriptions,’ a project on bodies under structural violence, with A. Zaides, 2016-18 at HAU-Hebbel am Ufer; 'What does it take to cross a border?', 2019 at ifa-gallery Berlin; 'Unversehrtheit: Conversations on the Integrity of the Body, 2020 with Künstlerhaus Mousonturm) and in dramaturgy in body-based performing arts. Her current research focuses on the right to bodily integrity from the perspective of body theory and aesthetic and performative practice. At Tanzquartier Wien (2009-14), Noeth engaged responsibility, religion, integrity and protest in relation to the body. She has edited books on the topic such as Bodies of Evidence: Ethics, Aesthetics, and Politics of Movement (2018, with G. Ertem) or ‘SCORES’ (2010-16, with Tanzquartier Wien). Her PhD research dealt with the entangled experience of the border and of collectivity in artistic work from Lebanon and Palestine, see Resilient Bodies, Residual Effects: Artistic Articulations of Borders and Collectivity from Lebanon and Palestine (2019). She has been working, amongst others, with DOCH-Stockholm University of the Arts and ashkal alwan HWP-program.

Minerva Cuevas es una artista conceptual con una obra que siempre dialoga con lo socio-político. Su obra incluye intervenciones in situ, video, fotografía así como instalaciones y gráficas. Su obra denuncia las consecuencias sociales y ecológicas del sistema económico mundial proponiendo la acción local y la equidad en la redistribución de flujos económicos. De manera paralela a su actividad artística, Cuevas crea en 1998 la corporación–empresa “Mejor Vida Corp.”. Esta empresa ofrece productos y servicios gratuitos como tarjetas de estudiantes internacionales, pases del metro, boletos de lotería, tickets de restaurantes entre otros. Así mismo, es miembro de Irational.org., organización de apoyo a artistas y organizaciones independientes que mantienen una visión crítica hacia la información y los sistemas. Su video disidencia (2010) despliega una cartografía fragmentaria de la multiplicidad de formas que la contestación puede tomar en un lugar tan controvertido como la Ciudad de México. Por otra parte, Beyond Borders (2010) se presenta como la documentación de una acción, de donde Cuevas cuestiona la noción de las fronteras. Estudió en la Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas de la UNAM.
Sandra Noeth es una profesora en el HZT-Centro-Inter-Universitario de la Danza, Berlín; curadora y dramaturga que trabaja en contextos independientes e institucionales en diferentes países. Se especializa en las perspectivas éticas y políticas de prácticas y teorías corporales (véase ‘The Violence of Inscriptions,’ un proyecto sobre cuerpos bajo violencia estructural con A. Zaides 2016-18 en el Hebbel Am Ufer, Berlín, ‘What does it take to cross a border?’ 2019 en la galería ifa, Berlín, y ‘Unversehrtheit: Conversations on the Integrity of the Body, 2020 con Künstlerhaus Mousonturm) y además en la dramaturgia de artes performáticas corporales. Su investigación actual se enfoca en el derecho a la integridad corporal desde las perspectivas de la teoría corporal, su estética y la práctica performativa. Ha editado libros acerca del tema, como Bodies of Evidence: Ethics, Aesthetics, and Politics of Movement (2018 con G. Ertem) o ‘SCORES’ (2010-16 con Tanzquartier Wien). Su investigación de doctorado trató la experiencia compleja de frontera y colectividad en trabajos artísticos en el Líbano y Palestina, véase Resilient Bodies, Residual Effects: Artistic Articulations of Borders and Collectivity from Lebanon and Palestine (2019). North ha estado trabajando, entre otros, con DOCH-Stockholm University of the Arts y ashkal alwan HWP-program.
