We invite you to the film premiere of "Anubhāva," the documentary film thesis by Asian American Studies M.A. candidate, Gunindu Abeysekera. The documentary captures the stories of three multi-generational Indian women who are at different levels of experience practicing Bharatanatyam, an Indian classical dance form that has roots in the ancient "Sadir" dance, which was banned by the British under colonial rule. The thesis explores the relationship between nostalgia, homeland, and activism through the performance of Bharatanatyam in the South Asian-American diaspora. Before the film premiere, we invite you to a complimentary dinner and art exhibit outside of Crystal Cove Auditorium. In the morning, we are excited to offer an interactive dance workshop instructed by one of the film's interview subjects and Indian classical artist, Sukanya Kumar. No prior experience is necessary.
